the big hearted michael john
by michael mayfield
The Big Hearted Michael John tells the story of a man who dared to make a difference in his life and times. Like all those who choose to be a Man in the Arena, Michael John Otey was courageous in both word and deed. His unflinching quest to aid those who were born on the downside of advantaged, was admired by many, but not all. Some powerful factions that felt threatened by rapid technological, political and social change, viewed his actions with suspicion.
Michael John faced the daunting task of staying true to his beliefs amidst a turbulent landscape that upended traditional political alliances. Those who objected to his actions were a powerful and unforgiving lot. His refusal to acquiesce to their demands, led to an unbridled effort to destroy him. An attack so unrelenting, that once unleashed, only death could arrest.
Throughout his journey, Michael John never lost his faith or courage. Importantly, he never lost sight of what truly mattered most in his life: family, honesty, integrity, love and forgiveness.
Historical context About the Time
America’s depression after World War I was amplified by Europe’s economic ills, which dramatically reduced The Old World's demand for American products. Debt-ridden farmers and ranchers throughout the region were pinched by tumbling commodity prices, and many were on the verge of bankruptcy. Michael John witnessed the unrelenting economic pressure firsthand, as the college's venders pleaded for timely payments. It was an extremely challenging time across the prairies. He sought to alleviate the farmers and ranchers' angst by making punctual payments, while also protecting Oklahoma A&M's finances. He simply refused to turn a blind eye to those in desperate need, particularly men who had just returned home from the war
Political and social unrest permeated Michael John Otey’s era. He and his contemporaries were forced to struggle with a relentlessly changing landscape. Financial panics, industrial advances, and mass immigration frayed the social fabric. Those dwelling on the lower economic rungs were acutely aware of the nation's strife, as they directly witnessed and experienced the tremendous human suffering. Many sought to bring about political changes that they hoped would generate relief to those grappling with widespread hardships.
Michael John Otey would find himself in the crosshairs of those espousing class and racial hatred. He had always identified with those who were down on their luck, and his thoughtfulness concerning all races was heightened by his younger sister and brother each marrying Native Americans. He accepted people as equals and attempted to help them any way he could, even if that placed him in harm's way. A noble notion yes, but a risky one as well.
“I hope that everyone who reads this book will be inspired by M. J. Otey’s strength of character and strive to live an honorable life guided by humility and integrity.”
— The Honorable Thad Balkman District Judge, Norman, Oklahoma
